Safe Haven
Because Sometimes Homelessness Happens
Safe Haven exists to help those suffering from short-term homelessness in Perth County. We work with those in the community to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

Hope Grows When People Care
About Us
The Situation
Homelessness can occur in an instant with the sudden loss of a job, relationship break up, or medical emergency. Loss of one’s home is often caused by economics and lack of accessibility to affordable housing. This can place people of low-economic status and vulnerable populations (such as seniors and newcomers to Canada) at risk. While the path to stability begins with a safe and peaceful shelter, options are quite limited in Perth County. Statistics for homelessness in any area are not always accurate due to under-reporting. In addition, individuals may seek to find their own shelter through other resources and those statistics are not tracked.

The Target
Supporters for Perth County’s homeless community are devising a comprehensive plan to provide those in need with shelter. Those who qualify for such shelter are persons within low-economic status, seniors, and newcomers who are experiencing homelessness for the first time. Those who are passionate about coming alongside homeless individuals will be invited to join this endeavor. Local churches, businesses, realtors, and others can be part of the solution.

The Proposal
Our aim is to invite people who would be willing to open their homes (Hosts) to individuals (Guests) who need transitional housing. The time frame for transitional housing will be 1 to 6 months. A process is in place to establish a good fit for both the Host and Guest (to help insure mutual agreement and a healthy relationship). Our organization will walk through the process with both the Host and Guest to completion of the Home Sharing agreement. The shared home would serve as a safe and peaceful environment for the Guest allowing them the opportunity to focus on securing permanent housing.
Legal counsel has reviewed the home sharing agreement and agree that this is not a landlord tenant situation, and in turn does not fall under the landlord tenancy act. This is not a commercial enterprise but a humanitarian endeavor.

Who is eligible to become a Host?

A peaceful private bedroom is required for their belongings and a comfortable place to rest their head.

How do I become a Host?
The steps to becoming a host begins with completing a host registration inquiry form. This form details a profile of Host, location and what you can provide.
If you are approved, we would present you with a profile of an individual in need. If you feel a connection could be made with the individual the next step would be to arrange a time and place where you could interview the recipient personally.
The next phase of the approval process requires that a contract between both parties is signed. This contract outlines lifestyle considerations and requirements.
You can now arrange details of stay and begin establishing your relationship.
Will I receive support and guidance From Safe Haven?
One of our priories for Safe Haven is to support and guide both Host and Guest throughout the term of their agreement.
- You will receive a Homesharing Information Package that consists of information that will help you get started.
- Will receive a list of Local Support Organizations.
- Direction to help your Guest find their own housing support worker.
Do I need to provide food, clothing or other items?
This will be dependent upon case to case and will be discussed between host and guest. The details of such can be outlined in the contract. (Each situation will be unique)
Can I charge A Fee?
The option to charge a fee will be solely the decision of the Host. We understand that expenses incurred to accommodate additional persons in the household may be a challenge. If you need financial assistance you may opt to charge a fair monthly fee. Homeless people often have a regular income from Social Assistance or their employment income. A mutual agreed upon fee that is reasonable based on their income can be determined at the first meeting stage.
What are the Risks?
It is the priority of Safe Haven to minimize the risk to both parties. Each party may need to complete a Vulnerable Sectors Check and Criminal Record Check. A questionnaire is required by both parties for screening purposes only.
